Spread across about 160.84 sq. km. in the northern part of the Western Ghats, the sanctuary was declared a protected area in 1990 and derives its name from the beautiful Purna River that flows through its dense forests. Unlike most regions of Gujarat, this area receives high rainfall of nearly 2500 mm annually, creating lush tropical moist deciduous forests dominated by teak, bamboo, sadad, khair and other native tree species. The sanctuary is home to remarkable biodiversity with wildlife such as leopard, hyena, jungle cat, sambar, barking deer, four-horned antelope, rhesus macaque, Indian civet and porcupine inhabiting its forests, while numerous bird species including hornbills, woodpeckers and flycatchers thrive in the rich habitat. Surrounded by rolling hills, rivers and tribal villages, Purna Wildlife Sanctuary offers visitors an untouched natural landscape, peaceful eco-tourism experiences and opportunities for wildlife.
